Premium Pack 2.71 Maintenance Update

Help & Manual Premium Pack 2 has been updated to version 2.71 for Help & Manual versions 7 and 6. This is just a minor maintenance update with corrections for a couple of issues reported by users of version 2.70. The only changes are in the WebHelp skins and the CHM skins. There have been no changes to the Smartphone skins, the iPad and Android tablet skins or the Dual-Mode Classic skins in this update.

How to get the update:

You can download and install the updated version with the same download link and installation password from the mail you received when you purchased your copy of the Premium Pack. If you no longer have this please contact support@ec-software.com and we will help you out.

WebHelp Skins changes:

Problems in Chrome with Index or Search disabled

On some computers and Windows versions WebHelp displayed in the Google Chrome browser would seem to hang or respond slowly when the timed browser cache feature was activated and the keyword index or search tab was deactivated. This has been corrected.

Unicode encoding for mail feedback

The mail feedback function now supports Unicode encoding and should work better with languages with Unicode character sets like Russian, Greek and Asian languages. (This is not supported in CHM because the Microsoft CHM viewer is not a Unicode program.)

Keyword index search improvements

You can now disable and hide the instant search feature for very large indexes, where it could cause unpleasant delays. The search is now automatically reset when you change the search mode (instant on/off, first word, word anywhere, full text).

CHM Skins changes:

Links in graphics hotspots

A problem with links in image hotspots in CHM files on some systems has been corrected. (Clicking on hotspot links would not work.)

Height of topic header

The topic header was not high enough in some cases if the logo image was turned off or smaller than the default image.

Help+Manual 7.0.5 Released – Responsive Webhelp Skins Updated!

We are glad to announce the release of Help+Manual 7.0.5!

This update focuses on updated skins. All responsive Webhelp skins have been updated and improved, with new re-designed icons with more distinctive shapes, more colors additional buttons (optional print button, a button to expand toggle-texts) and improved responsive behaviour.

Responsive Skins Updated

The updated responsive Webhelp skins are easier to customize and to translate. Background colors and icons colors have been moved to variables, all translatable texts are variables as well. So by opening one of the skins and modifying a few variables, you can easily customize the look and feel to your own needs, and translate it into your language, if required.

To customize a Webhelp skin, start with the included skin file “Webhelp, iFrames Responsive, Blue.hmskin” and make a copy of this skin. Open the copy in Help+Manual and navigate to the “Variables” configuration section as shown below. Modify colors as needed and recompile your help project with the modified skin to see the results. All text captions are implemented as variables to easy translation into other languages.

Changes, bug-fixes and improvements in 7.0.5

  • The three basic CHM skins now have an optional print button (this was implemented after several user requests, although the CHM viewer has a dedicated print button on the toolbar, but here you go)
  • Responsive Webhelp skins have new icons with a more exact shape and and additional optional print button. Colors and icon sets are implemented with variables to make changes to the look & feel much easier. All caption texts are translatable. Responsive behaviour has been improved and a small optical glitch was fixed, to adjust the vertical position of the page propertly, when linking to a topic anchor.
  • Word/DOCX export: some style combinations did not work in Word – text styles with bold and/or italic font style did not always appear bold/italic in MS Word.
  • Photoshop images: the plugin for native PSD images was defunct
  • Old Winhelp-style SHG images: converting hard-coded hotspots from manually inserted SHG files did not retain the image hotspots properly.
  • MOBI/Kindle command line compilation did not work
  • OLE equation objects: MathType equation objects did not update their size right after inserting a new equation.
  • Webhelp output with image hotspots: the CSS for image hotspots has been changed to make the hotspots work better with mobile devices (some mobile browsers ignored the hotspots, because the were initially invisible).
  • PDF manual designer: several minor improvements and one error fixed
  • PDF output with “CID font embedding”: better handling of text symbols and bullets.
  • Topic editor: when selecting an entire table with the context menu for copy & paste, the resulting paste command copied only the table cells content, but not the entire table.
  • Last, not least, we have implemented ad-hoc variables that calculate expressions. These new variables are mostly used in skins to make the end-user configuration of skins easier. More on calculation variables in a later article in this blog!

Premium Pack 2.70 Update

Help & Manual Premium Pack 2 has now been updated to version 2.70 for Help & Manual versions 7 and 6. The main reason for the update from 2.51 to 2.70 is to support some key new features in Help & Manual 7. In addition to this, a problem with the social sharing popup has been corrected in the WebHelp skins (the Twitter button was sometimes displayed before the popup was opened).

The update is fully compatible with Help & Manual 6 but the new HM7 features are not relevant there, of course.

How to get the update:

You can download and install the updated version with the same download link and installation password from the mail you received when you purchased your copy of the Premium Pack. If you no longer have this please contact support@ec-software.com and we will help you out.

Scaleable CHM files for high-resolution screens

CHMs produced by Help & Manual 7 can scale gracefully on high-resolution screens so that the text is not too small to read. The CHM skins now include larger versions of the navigation and menu icons that are used automatically at higher resolutions. These icons also benefit Help & Manual 6 users, but the scalable content features are only available for CHMs published with Help & Manual 7.

Support for the new EWriter help and eBook format

In the Help & Manual 7 version the WebHelp skins can be used in the new EWriter help format that is an exciting alternative to CHM for Windows application help. It gives you WebHelp in a single file, with full support for context help links to topics and anchors. EWriter replaces the Windows EXE eBook format in Help & Manual 7. This feature cannot be used at all in Help & Manual 6.

Improved Smartphone skins

The smartphone skins have been updated with higher-resolution TOC icons, larger TOC text and wider TOC entry spacing to conform to Google’s requirements for mobile-friendly sites. This is also fully supported in Help & Manual 6.

Classic Dual-Mode skins

There have been no changes to the Dual-Mode Classic skins in this update. Their version number and content remain the same.

Unpatched Vulnerability (0day) in Flash Player

A new vulnerability in the latest Adobe Flash player (Flash version 16.0.0.257) is already being actively exploited. One can expect older versions of Flash player to be affected as well. At risk are Windows users from Windows XP to Windows 8.

Disabling Flash player for some days might be a good idea.

Is Help & Manual affected?

No, not generally. Help & Manual does not use Flash. Even the Webhelp output of Help & Manual 6 does not rely on Flash anywhere, it is entirely built on standard web technology with HTML5 and Javascript.

However, if you include videos in Adobe Flash format into your documentation, keep in mind that users might not be able to view the content, because they may disable Flash player in general until a fix becomes available.

Premium Pack 2.51 + 1.64 Maintenance Update

The Help & Manual Premium Pack installer packages for Help & Manual 6 have been updated to versions 2.51 and 1.64 (the 1.64 classic skins are also included in the new Premium Pack 2 installer package). This is a minor maintenance update with a couple of small new features and fixes.

Version 2.51 Update:

WebHelp Skins:

  • New search modes for keyword index
Users can now choose between three search modes in the keyword index: Full Text Search finds anywhere in all keyword index entries; First Word finds the typed characters only at the beginning of each keyword index entry; and Any Word finds the characters at the beginning of any word in each entry.
  • Minimum characters for instant keyword index search
Instant search on typing for keyword index search now does not trigger until at least 3 characters have been typed (you can adjust this setting).
  • Keyword index search corrections
Instant search scrolled to hits that were parts of words although the actual search was only from the beginning of the keyword entry. Scrolling and highlighting now match the search mode selected by the user.
  • Image toggle initialization failure
Image toggles in WebhHelp skins failed to initialize if there was a % character in the tooltip or caption of the image toggle.
  • Advanced popups resize mouse cursor
In some browsers the mouse cursor showed the resize icon beyond the borders of the popup.

Smartphone Skins:

  • Tap table and image zoom Close button
The Close button for tap tables and zoomed images did not work on Google Chrome on some phones.
  • Image resize on first load
Images sometimes failed to resize to the phone screen dimensions the first time a topic was loaded on some devices.

Version 1.64 Update (version 1 skins for HM6, also included in 2.51):

  • Advanced popups resize mouse cursor
In some browsers the mouse cursor showed the resize icon beyond the borders of the popup.
  • Spurious scrollbar in navigation pane
In the horizontal tabs skins, if the project title contained a very long word that extended beyond the border of the TOC title a spurious horizontal scrollbar could appear, shifting the navigation tabs upward.

How to get the updates:

You can download and install the updated version with the same download link and installation password from the mail you received when you purchased your copy of the Premium Pack. If you no longer have this please contact support@ec-software.com and we will help you out.

Timed Browser Cache

Premium Pack 2.5 for Help & Manual adds a major new feature: “Timed Browser Cache” ensures that web browsers always display the latest versions of your topics instantly. Visitors no longer need to clear their browser cache or reload multiple times to view new and updated topics. If you don’t yet have the Premium Pack this is one of the best reasons ever to start using it. If you do, you’ll want to update to version 2.5 right away. Timed Browser Cache is available in the WebHelp skins, smartphone skins and the new combined iPad and Android tablet skin.

Combined iPad + Android Tablet Skin

The dedicated iPad skin receives a major upgrade and is now also compatible with current Android tablets. This also includes offline web app mode, which allows users to save their WebHelp documentation locally and view it without an Internet connection.

Other Improvements

Premium Pack 2 also includes a number of other major improvements in the all the web-based skins. See the full change log further below for details.

Help+Manual 6.5.1 & Premium Pack Update

Help & Manual has been updated to version 6.5.1. This update fixes a vulnerability in the Webhelp index page script, that could possibly have been a door to execute malicious javascript code. The vulnerability is fixed in the default templates, in the standard skins included with Help & Manual and in the Premium Pack skins.

Premium Pack Update

The Help & Manual Premium Pack download packages for Help & Manual 6 have been updated to versions 2.41 and 1.61. This is generally a maintenance update but it includes a major update for the smartphone skins, which now support Help & Manual’s normal integrated search for WebHelp. This is much easier to use and configure and is generally preferable.

These updates apply to the full Premium Pack version 2 package and the separate Premium Pack version 1 package for Help & Manual 6. In addition to this the download package for Help & Manual 5 has been updated to version 1.57 with some minor corrections and adjustment of the iPad skin there for compatibility with the current version of iOS.

In addition to this the help has been updated with a reference of the include options you can use when using the Premium Pack skins for command line and batch publishing.

How to get the updates:

Important – update Help & Manual as well: The search support in the smartphone skins  update requires the Help & Manual 6.5.1 Build 2970 update released on May 30, 2014. It won’t work without it because the search components won’t be exported with these skins if you use an earlier version of Help & Manual.

You can download and install the updated version with the same download link and installation password from the mail you received when you purchased the Premium Pack. If you no longer have this please contact support@ec-software.com and we will help you out.

Premium Pack 2.40/1.60a Update

The Help & Manual Premium Pack download packages for Help & Manual 6 have been updated to versions 2.40 and 1.60a. The version 1 update has just been given an “a” suffix because the changes there are very minimal: The main skins have not changed at all; the only real change is the updated version of the iPad skin that is shared with version 2.40.

In addition to some minor changes, the 2.40 package includes a new “Samurai Red” WebHelp theme in response to requests from many users, who wanted the color scheme of this theme from the old 1.x skins.

  • V. 2.40 WebHelp: New Samurai Red WebHelp theme
This color theme was very popular in Premium Pack 1.x and has now been added as a WebHelp theme in the current 2.40 package.
  • V. 2.40 CHM: Mail Links in CHM files
Links that created an email failed in CHM files when the file link fix function in the CHM skins was on. This has now been corrected.
  • V. 2.40 & 1.60a WebHelp & iPad: Searches enclosed in quotes
If you use the JavaScript search platform enclosing the search argument in quotes will now only find complete words. For example, searching for “red dog” will only find topics that contain the exact words “red” and “dog”, not “Redmond” or “doggone”. You still need to use PHP or ASP search to search for exact phrases, however.
  • V. 2.40 WebHelp: Google Chrome in full screen mode
Google Chrome in full screen mode (F11) was incorrectly identified as a mobile browser and the new tab and undock tools were disabled.
  • V. 2.40 WebHelp: WebHelp in an iFrame
Links from the parent page to WebHelp in an iFrame opened in a new tab or window instead of in the iFrame.
  • V. 2.40 and 1.60a WebHelp, iPad: Google Analytics tracking
An issue was discovered in the Google Analytics tracking code generated by Help & Manual that could cause more than one tracking signal per page view to be sent to Google Analytics. This has now been corrected in Help & Manual and the updated WebHelp and iPad skins support this. The current version of Help & Manual is required.
  • V. 2.40 WebHelp: Favicon images in stand-alone topics
The favicon image was referenced incorrectly in stand-alone topics, so that no favicon was displayed in the browser tab or title bar when a topic was displayed without the full user interface. This was almost never visible, since topics are hardly ever displayed on their own.

Premium Pack 2.30 Update Supports Android and Windows Touch

The 2.30 update to the Help & Manual Premium Pack is now available and adds several important and valuable new features. Many of these features have also been added to the simultaneous 1.57 update for the original Premium Pack 1 skins for Help & Manual 6.

How to get the updates for 2.30 and 1.57:

You can download and install the updated version with the same download link and installation password from the mail you received when you purchased the Premium Pack. If you no longer have this please contact support@ec-software.com and we will help you out.

New Features:

Android Compatibility:

Both the dedicated WebHelp skins and the Classic Dual-Mode skins are now compatible with current Android tablets and smartphones, with fast touch response and rotation support. With Firefox or Opera for Android it is even possible to use them with older Android devices, back to 2.3.6 Gingerbread. The dedicated smartphone skins are also still available, of course.

Windows Touch Compatibility:

Similarly, the skins will now also work with Windows 8 touch devices like the Microsoft Surface and other Windows 8 tablet/laptop hybrids and Windows 8 laptops with touch screens. This will work best with Windows 8.1, which has radically improved support for this functionality.

Current topic URL in browser Address bar:

The WebHelp, Classic Dual-Mode, iPad and Smartphone skins now all show the real URL to the current topic in the browser Address: bar as soon as the topic is loaded (index.html?topic.htm#anchor). This works in all modern browsers and Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and higher. IE 9 and earlier do not support this function and show the same static URLs as before.

Changes for New Google Indexing Behavior:

Google no longer indexes pages that automatically reload themselves. To accommodate this, topic pages in WebHelp now no longer automatically reload themselves with the table of contents when they are linked to directly, for example from search result links. Instead, the topic opens on its own with a highlighted link or button at the top with which the user can display the table of contents.

Open in a New Tab from the Table of Contents:

As a result of the Google change, it is now also possible to use the browser’s “open in new tab” function to open topics in a new tab or window from the links in the TOC. Changes have been made to ensure that this works smoothly.

Bug fixes and issues:

A number of smaller issues reported by some users have also been fixed in this update.

WebHelp Skins:

  • Disqus comments in Google Chrome displayed incorrectly due to changes in Disqus’ iFrame behavior.

  • Topics opened on their own without the TOC displayed incorrectly in some versions of Internet Explorer

Dual-Mode Classic Skins:

  • On some systems it was necessary to activate Compatibility Mode in Internet Explorer 9 to prevent the Classic skins from displaying a blank page in WebHelp. This is now no longer necessary.

CHM Skins:

  • When the file link fixer function was active KLinks and ALinks inserted with the Script Link function (for example for automated See Also lists) failed because the links were incorrectly converted.
